Join Ayse Zarakol, Professor of International Relations, and Hans van de Ven, Professor of Modern Chinese History, in conversation about Professor Zarakol’s new book: ‘Before the West: The Rise and Fall of Eastern World Orders’.

The book, published in April 2022, offers a grand narrative of (Eur)Asia and uses that to rethink the foundational concepts and debates of international relations, such as order and decline.

Ayse Zarakol is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow at Emmanuel College. She is the author of After Defeat: How the East Learned to Live with the West (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and the editor of the prize-winning Hierarchies in World Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

Hans van der Ven is Professor of Modern Chinese History, Director in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at St Catharine's College and previously served as Chair of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He is also Guest Professor at the Department of History of Nanjing University. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/crawfordism
