At twelve minutes past eight last Friday morning, bells across the country rang out for three minutes, to mark the first day of the Olympic Games.

Big Ben chimed more than forty times, the first time the bell has rung out of step since the funeral of King George the sixth in 1952.

In Weymouth, the ship's company of RFA Mounts Bay joined in by ringing the ship's bell.
