Beyond The Beyond is a cute Jrpg that was developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PS1/PSX in 1995. Though not the first RPG released for the PS1/PSX, this game was the first available in the west for the console using the traditional JRPG gameplay style like the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games, NICE!

I've read many reviews about this game and I have to be honest, most of them didn't like this game, I don't know why. Sure, this game has it's generic Jrpg issues and it's quite linear but I thought it was a pretty nice little Jrpg for the console.

This game, to me, broke away from the SNES standard feeling of Jrpgs on the Playstation and it felt more like it came from an old Sega console. Little animated pictures of character's faces showing was a thing Sega did much more often than Nintendo when it came to Jrpg games, it was refreshing to see something different.

The game's graphics are not fantastic but I have seen MUCH worse on the PS1/PSX console, trust me. The battle graphics and mechanics remind me of Golden Sun mixed in with some Breath of Fire, I think that would be a fair comparison, both fantastic games in their own rights.

Skills and animations are okay and there is a nice mix of skills each character can get. Each character having their own generic set of skills, for example, the girl being the healer class. The main guy being a warrior type class, you get another guy also towards the beginning of the game, he's like a tank class, see where i'm going with this.

The music for the game is nice and cute, and sound effects for skills, selecting things etc.. are okay.

If there is a complaint I have about this game is load times between screens, this is understandable though as data has to be read from a Disc. I think another thing that got me was the encounter rate, it's very random, you can go through two screens without encountering a single fight then go through the same two screens again and encounter 3/4 fight.

Would I recommend this game now? yeah sure, if you're looking for a Jrpg to play that you probably haven't played before and can handle high encounter rates and a slow beginning. I enjoyed what I played of it, it felt like something new to me, if that makes any sense at all.
