Bout presents: Big Run ㅡ The Supreme 4WD Challenge (Intro)
Big Run: The Supreme 4WD Challenge (ビッグラン) is a video game released by Jaleco in 1989. It was released for arcades, the SNES, the Amiga, and the Atari ST. The arcade version came out worldwide in 1989. The Amiga and Atari ST versions came out exclusively in Europe in January 1991. The SNES version came out exclusively in Japan on March 20th, 1991. There are three cabinets of the arcade version: an upright cabinet , a sit-down cabinet, and a deluxe cabinet with motion. This game puts players behind the wheel of powerful off-road vehicles, allowing them to compete in high-speed races across various challenging terrains.
A rally racing game and sim in which the player takes part in the Paris-Dakar rally. The game actually begins in Tripoli, Libya and passes through around 2,500 miles of African desert, swamp and jungle on the way to Dakar. In addition to passing each checkpoint under the required time - the checkpoint system ubiquitous in solo racing games of the era - the player must also be aware of environmental dangers along the course and needs to select a sponsor, navigator and engineer team before starting. They must also balance the weight of their car, as too few replacement parts might cause a problem further into the race yet having too many will greatly reduce the car's top speed. Jaleco originally developed the game for the Arcades before porting it to the Super Famicom. This home version was never released outside Japan. The game was also ported to the Amiga and Atari ST, where it is known simply as Big Run.
In Big Run, players can choose from a selection of four different 4WD (four-wheel drive) vehicles, each with its own unique characteristics in terms of speed, acceleration, and handling. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing friends to join in on the excitement and compete against each other.
The controls in Big Run are intuitive, offering responsive handling that allows players to maneuver their vehicles with precision. Players must master the art of drifting and braking to tackle sharp turns and maintain control over their vehicles on treacherous terrains. Additionally, players can utilize a turbo boost feature strategically to gain an extra burst of speed and overtake their rivals.
The gameplay revolves around participating in intense off-road races set in different locations around the world. Players will encounter a variety of environments, including deserts, forests, snow-covered mountains, and more. These diverse landscapes not only provide a visually appealing experience but also pose various obstacles and hazards that players must navigate to secure victory.
The game features multiple game modes to keep players engaged—the main mode is the Championship mode, where players compete in a series of races across different tracks to earn points and aim for the ultimate victory. There is also a Time Attack mode, where players strive to set the fastest lap times on individual tracks, challenging themselves and aiming for new records.

In Japan, Game Machine listed Big Run on their November 15, 1989, issue as being the second most-successful upright arcade game of the month. It went on to become Japan's fourth highest-grossing dedicated arcade game of 1990, below Super Monaco GP, Winning Run Suzuka GP and Special Criminal Investigation. In North America, it was the top-grossing new video game on the RePlay arcade charts in January 1990.
Commodore User reviewed the arcade game, giving it an 85% score.
There were criticisms directed towards certain aspects of the game. One commonly mentioned issue was the controls, with some reviewers finding them to be less responsive or somewhat challenging to master. The difficulty level of the game was also a point of contention, as some felt it was unbalanced, resulting in frustrating gameplay moments.
Furthermore, the lack of innovation and depth in gameplay mechanics was mentioned as a drawback. Some critics felt that the game didn't offer enough variety or unique features to distinguish it from other racing titles of the time. The absence of a comprehensive single-player campaign or storyline was also highlighted as a missed opportunity.
