Le joueur pilote l'agile AH-69 Mohawk, un hélicoptère de combat avancé doté d'un puissant arsenal d'armes. Le jeu se compose de sept campagnes qui se déroulent dans différentes zones, et chaque campagne a un certain nombre de missions différentes. En plus des objectifs de recherche et de destruction, il y a des otages qui doivent être sauvés. Le jeu a établi des comparaisons avec Soviet Strike, un autre simulateur d'hélicoptère sorti la même année. Cependant, Black Dawn ressemble à un jeu d'arcade plutôt qu'à un simulateur typique, notamment parce que divers bonus sont obtenus à partir d'ennemis détruits.

The game consists of seven campaigns that take place in different areas, and each campaign has a number of different missions. In addition to search-and-destroy objectives, there are hostages that require saving. The game has drawn comparisons with Soviet Strike, another helicopter simulator released in the same year. However, Black Dawn resembles an arcade game rather than a typical simulator, not least because various power-ups are obtained from destroyed enemies.
