Braxton Wirthlin // BMX Sponsor Me Tape // 2002
So many memories of my youth came rushing in when Shad sent me a picture of Braxton’s sponsor me VHS tape from 2002 on his hand. We were all just kids back then, I was a senior in high school. We lived BMX back then, literally every waking second was consumed with it. Braxton and I lived ten minutes from each other and would hang out nearly everyday at this point in our lives. We would go out and ride everyday, and sometimes bring out the camcorder to film. We made a zine called “dump truck” together, we even had a little clothing company together called “Unscene”, which later he took over for himself.
Back then (before social media) we would put little videos together using two VCR’s, a blank tape, and a lot of time. Then we would send them to BMX companies that we loved in hopes of getting hooked up. That’s how it worked when you lived outside of California to get noticed. Braxton sent this one to Solid bikes, and I’d imagine a few other company’s he dreamed to be a part of at that time.
Shad finding this tape is extra special to me because, sadly, Braxton passed last year suddenly to Cancer. It was unexpected and quick, he only knew about the cancer for about 6 weeks before it consumed his life. Losing him so early in life has effected so many of us that were close to him, he was a great husband to his wife Melissa and great father to his two beautiful children. The community loves and misses you Braxton, see you in the other side.
