The achievements of this Galactic Imperium were accomplished, however, without the aid of computers or AI. As a consequence of our victory against the Thinking Machines millennia ago, it is forbidden to construct any machine in the likeness of a human mind. Rather than hindering humanity's progress, this caused us to further unlock human potential in myriad ways.
The logic and probabilistic computation of the Mentats have replaced the need for computers and thinking machines...
Society is covertly guided by the Bene Gesserit's machinations as they continue to alter the body politic through genetic engineering programs...
And the space-folding prescience of the Spacing Guild allows their order to chart a ship's course through the stars faster than light...
These factions are regularly employed by the various noble houses of the Imperium's aristocracy. Their skills as military strategists, political advisers, and power brokers are ever in demand by ambitious lords eager to enrich their planetary fiefs.
Though this advancement of human capability and breadth of interstellar civilization relies on one multivariate resource, the Spice Melange. It is the sole resource essential for all space travel, life extension, and the development of the mystical, super-sensory powers in humans. And this spice can only be found on the harsh desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune; a world where sandworms hundreds of meters long roam the wastes, and the native inhabitants have long rebelled against the Imperium's extraction of the precious spice.
Frank Herbert's Dune series spans six books and covers thousands of years of history. A new interpretation of this literary universe is once again coming to the big screen, providing another opportunity to explore the depth of this film's setting.
