C64 Longplay - Troll
As requested by Hexagonaal ;)
Also released for the ZX Spectrum. Played using infinite lives and with music switched-off, as it gets very irritating. The original release had some crap instructions so I wrote my own:
Ingame keys:
F1 - toggles pause/unpause
F3 - toggles music/sound effects
Joystick port 2 or
LEFT SHIFT to N - right
M to RIGHT SHIFT - left
A to # - down
Q to ] - up
1 to = / SPACE BAR - throw item / change item / jump while running
Features:
ENERGY - Is sapped on contact with Goblins. Loss of a life follows. Goblins can throw a Hole of Death at you resulting in loss of life.
WHEEL OF FORTUNE - As indicated by the icons to the left. Any of the selected (magnified) geometric shapes when received will send you to the corresponding cave when thrown on the floor and walked over.
The tri-coloured cube sends you to a random cave or death. The Skull Icon creates Holes of Death that kill goblins (to delay them, as they keep regenerating) and yourself if stepped over!
Items thrown remain on the ground until you lose a life or leave the cave.
MUSHROOM - Jump on it and press FIRE to change current item (Wheel of Fortune icon). Only works a number of times before disappearing. Reappears at random. Also serves as a temporary platform.
MOVING SPOTLIGHT - Takes you to another cave if stepped on (see Wheel of Fortune).
GOBLIN - These critters run around frantically, sapping your energy if touched. They randomly throw items corresponding with the Wheel of Fortune and build up platforms to trap you. If you stand still for too long they will undoubtedly get you.
You can throw items to kill or send off goblins, though they are not so stupid as to walk into a trap unless you throw it directly at them.
Warning: They sometimes tend to make too many platforms that can't be removed, sometimes blocking the way to a GEM permanently (this must be a design flaw).
PLATFORMS - They consist of circles, triangles, squares, pentagons, and hexagons. The Wheel of Fortune icons correspond with the type of cave layout.
A running jump will get you two platforms up. You can fall onto the ground from this height but no higher. You can be trapped between platforms and the only way out is to wait for a goblin to kill you or a moving spotlight to take you to another cave (I zoomed the game up in these situations for a quicker death).
PYRAMID - When touched it bounces you to the flip-side of the screen. Only works once so use it before a goblin does. They reappear at random.
GEM - (stationary geometric shape) Creates icon at top-right of screen when picked up.
Collect all SIX from one cave to beat the game.
Unlike all other items it stays there all the time, even after you die. Sometimes these are inaccessible due to being elevated too high, making the game uncompletable. I had to use a sprite co-ords hack at 36:17 at the end to reach it.
HEART - Extra life (not needed as I used infinite lives)
Items for points/extra energy
CHERRIES - 100
GREEN APPLE - 200
PINK ORBS - 400
LEMON - 500
COCONUT - 600
PEAR - ???
CHALICE - ???
WATER MELON - ???
BANANA - ???
PYRAMID at start - 1000
