Chandra Shekhar Azad, also known as Azad, was an Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter who played a significant role in India's struggle for independence from British rule. He was born on July 23, 1906, in Bhavra village, present-day Madhya Pradesh, India, and died on February 27, 1931, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.
One of Azad's most well-known acts was his involvement in the Kakori train robbery in 1925. Along with other revolutionaries, he carried out the daring act to loot the British government's money being transported on a train at Kakori, near Lucknow. The aim was to use the funds for the revolutionary activities against the British.
Azad's role as a prominent freedom fighter intensified after the death of the HSRA's leader, Ram Prasad Bismil. He became the new leader and continued to carry out acts of resistance against the British government. His ability to escape from multiple police encounters earned him the nickname "Azad," which means "free" or "independent."
On February 27, 1931, Azad faced a fierce gun battle with the British police in Allahabad's Alfred Park (now called Chandra Shekhar Azad Park). Though heavily outnumbered and cornered, he chose to shoot himself rather than surrender to the British. His act of defiance and sacrifice made him an enduring symbol of India's fight for independence.
