The Merge is basically the migration of the Ethereum network from a Proof of Work to a Proof of Stake consensus mechanism. Up until now, miners were using physical computing power to verify blocks of transactions on the Ethereum network. In return for the work put into verifying transactions, miners received a reward in the form of ETH coins. This is how the Proof of Work model functions.
