Summary:
This video essay was a criticism of why the Canon event mythology that was introduced in across the spider-verse is consequential. I believe it is a detriment to the story of Spiderman, not just for the viewers but also the actual characters. The main reasons being, it ruins the characters free will, the emotions surrounding the people they can't save and the point of putting effort into heroism if you can't change the outcome of a scene. I discuss the hero lore that makes up Spiderman and why that was special in the first place. Why it has now been taken away and my predictions for why the canon events will be broken by the end of the next Spiderman film.

Partial script

Since 2002 we have had 10 spider man movies in between competing studios Sony and Marvel. And any fan worth their salt noticed that not only are these movies incredible but they have somewhat defined the feats of how good super-hero movies can be.

The newest triumph was across the spider-verse following the story of miles morals as he prepares to battle the multiverse threat he unleashed, issues relating to the origin of his powers and being told about the spider-verse.
Now was Across the spider-verse a bad movie? of course not, but that’s not what I am going to talk about.
I want to explain why in the latest movie, across the spider-verse, the introduction of the canon event mythology by Miguel o hara and what it means for miles and the spider-verse, takes away the free will, the stacks, and the heart of why Spiderman's stories were so meaningful in the first place. Not just for the audience but for the spiders themselves, and because I think the canon events ruins what made spider man special for us and the characters. from this I will give my predictions for why, by the end of the next instalment in the trilogy, beyond the spider-verse they will be broken.

Chapter 1: With great power.
Spiderman's whole arc has always involved accepting that having powers comes hand and hand with having the responsibility to use them. They come together, without the responsibility those powers don’t have meaning and without the powers he isn’t responsible. These themes aren’t exclusive to Spiderman obviously.

Chapter 2: Canon Why?
Now is this idea kind of hauntingly beautiful? Yeah... To think that all versions of yourself must suffer in the exact same way to accomplish your greatest deeds. . but then why does it ruin Spiderman? Why does this utterly destroy everything that made Spiderman special in the first place, Well I’m being dramatic, this wouldn’t stop me from watching Spiderman movies, but i have unsettled reservations about what this actually means. And after I explain you might agree.

Chapter 3: Beyond the Spider-verse.
Just know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you saw the title you might have noticed. I said “Canon events. What made Spiderman special is gone, for now…
Meaning I don’t think they are going to stay. specially not by the end of the next film. I have a couple reason for this. On top of this system ruining spider-man for our sake as I have discussed, it also sucks for the character themselves, so it seems to me that the whole point of the canon events is that nobody likes them I don’t think that’s a coincidence. So maybe I’m right in thinking it does ruin a lot of things and us only knowing about it now is on purpose. So how does it ruin things for the characters as well?
