As opposed to wasting their time on a needless RE4 remake.

Scripto:

The earlier, scrapped version of RE4, AKA Resident Evil 3.5 looked pretty rad, you must admit.

It almost felt more Silent Hill than Silent Hill in a way, or at least, that's what I used to say. Actually, it feels more like Fatal Frame at times.
Possessed dolls laughing like derranged madmen while trying to stab you? Something something Silent Hill X Fatal Frame X Haunting Ground I dunno.

You're exploring this cold, dead, spooky castle mansion, and out of nowhere, a hallucination could strike at any time.

Now there's not a ton we know about this prototype version of Resident Evil 4, such as, would hallucinations be the only enemy? I say, throw actual, real enemies in there, such as zombies/BOWs. It would put the player on edge, such as, what enemy is real, and what isn't. Hallucination enemies would sometimes dissipate into
dark foggy mist after a single shot. Other hallucination enemies would seem more real, and actually bleed over the floor, and lay there dead after being killed. There
corpse would persist for a while, then you come back a minute later, and it's gone. Was it real or not?

Real enemies would leave a corpse for just about the entirety of the game, giving real enemies more weight. Maybe corpses could even attract other enemies to feed upon
them, or maybe the corpses would reanimate as a hallucination? Perhaps the game could have a RE Outbreak-like system like with the virus meter, except this would
essentially be a sanity meter, that wouldn't
kill you outright if it got too high, it would just more constantly screw with your mind. Maybe even at high levels, you would have a Cry of Fear moment, like with that ghost lady influencing Simon to blow his own brains out, except it would be with Leon having such an insanely rattled brain, going nuts from all these hallucinations, he's willing to shoot himself right in the head, and you have to resist it by spamming buttons, maybe button binds could randomly swap or do different actions, kind of like that one Eternal Darkness-esque game made by Yahtzee.

Leon could possibly find herbs with mind mending properties (Blue herbs perhaps? Or maybe a new purple herb) or even drugs, like psy-block straight out of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to reduce the effects of the fog virus on his mind.
Sanity effects could be more long lasting, and be more believable when they do happen. Not just hallucination based enemies, but other weird shit going on to really fuck with the player.

I want the sanity effects to be so believable, that it would put Eternal Darkness's sanity effect system to shame. No flash to white, no "THIS CAN'T REALLY BE HAPPENING!"
shenanigans. I want hallucinations to be smooth and vivid, seamlessly blending into gameplay. I want it to fuck with the player more than a thousand PTs.
Perhaps hallucination setpieces could be randomly flagged to never trigger, upon starting a new game. Give the game some Resident Evil 3 randomization elements too,
swapping sets of items, and enemies, etc. And like Eternal Darkness, you could pick up jape ammo, that would only work on a hallucination enemy, but when you
fired it at a real enemy, it would seem to fire and hit them, even causing a blood splatter, but not actually doing any damage. Perhaps there could be an examine inventory/weapon function, to check your gun, have Leon really look at the magazine in his gun, and see if there's *actually* bullets loaded in there.

You could even have a setpiece where there's mirrors, and if Leon accidentally shoots at himself in the mirror, it hurts him too. And if he lands a headshot, you're beef jerky baby. Maybe Leon could blindfold himself to avoid certain hallucinations, I don't know.

There's about a million creative ways to handle a Resident Evil 3.5

You know, I once had a dream about Resident Evil 4. It was in a creepy, dank dark green sewer/jail/dungeon. Leon was just walking about, and then all of a sudden, his face gets ripped off by an unseen enemy. Perhaps a cousin of the Novistador, only far more sinister. It could be an enemy that murders you if you stand still for too long. Kind of a Baal from Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction type of thing, except far more deadly. Perhaps this wouldn't be a real enemy at all? Maybe it would just be tied to a hallucination based enemy or event, except the death would be quite real.

As for the timeline of Resident Evil 3.5? It would take place before RE4. Leon could get misleading information on the whereabouts of Ashley Graham, and is led to the Fog Mansion. Bam, game.

I think a Resident Evil 3.5 would be infinitely more interesting than a RE4 remake, as it doesn't exactly need it. If anything, all RE4 needs is a redux version, that adds some quality of life changes, like inventory autosort, the ability to disable cutscene QTEs, and most importantly make the HD project official and integrateit with the game.
