Carcharodon isn't game I knew much about, but the eye-catching pixel art in this shoot 'em up seemed worthy of attention.

It's a fairly standard arcade shoot 'em up, although what does set it apart is the fact players must select the weapons they want to use in each of the game's levels from a loadout menu at the start of the game, rather than the traditional method of harvesting power-ups from defeated enemies.

Choosing passive skills is actually quite innovative, although the separation into active and passive skills really just serves to confuse matters, and the whole system becomes more hassle than it's worth. It's impossible to remember what each of the power-up icons represent whilst on mission, so I went with the default loadouts set by the developers.

Loadout system aside, Carcharodon looks good, but it doesn't really stack up with the likes of Project-X or Apidya. It's really very tough in places - the level where you have to fly backwards through tiny gaps in the scenery was a massive pain - and, apart from the graphics, doesn't leave much of a lasting impression.
