Chrono Cross (クロノ・クロス Kurono Kurosu) is a role-playing video game developed and released in 1999 by Square for the PlayStation game console. The game is a sequel to Chrono Trigger which was released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Chrono Cross was largely designed by screenwriter and director Masato Kato, who was assisted by other designers who have worked on Chrono Trigger, including art director Yasuyuki Honne and composer Yasunori Mitsuda. The character design is done by Nobuteru Yūki.
The story of Chrono Cross focuses on a teenage boy named Serge with the theme of a parallel world. After being faced with an alternate reality where he died as a child, Serge tries to find the truth behind the distortion of the two worlds. An eccentric thief named Kid and many other characters help him on his journey around the tropical islands of El Nido. In his struggle to uncover his past and find the mysterious Frozen Flame, Serge is challenged by Lynx, a dark antagonist who is trying to capture him.
Chrono Cross was released in Japan in 1999 and in North America in 2000. At the time, it was critically acclaimed, with GameSpot even giving it a perfect 10.0 score.[2][3] The game has published more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. This earned him inclusion in the re-release series Greatest Hits in the United States and Ultimate Hits in Japan.[4][5] Chrono Cross was also later re-released for the PlayStation Network in Japan in July 2011, and in North America four months after.[6]
