City Hunter (PC Engine) Playthrough [English] - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1990 license-based action-adventure for the NEC PC Engine, City Hunter (シティハンター).
Since the game never got an English release on the TurboGrafx-16, I am playing the game using a translation patch. If you're interested in checking it out yourself, you can find the patch at https://www.romhacking.net/translations/4517/
1:57 Gone With the Girl
12:01 Umibozu Hates Cats
20:23 Ryo & Saeko's Flight
26:30 Escape from Hell
City Hunter revolves around a Tokyo cop, Ryo, who is known for being a total badass and womanizer - think of him as an alternate Jonathan Ingram (from Policenauts). He's an ace investigator, he's great with a gun, he loves to perv on the ladies at every given opportunity, and he's joined by his sidekick, Kaori, who happens to be female. What a surprise.
The levels are posed as individual stories within the larger City Hunter framework, and they're all made of big interconnected areas that need to be explored. In each stage, you'll have to search out key people that will direct you to your next objective, and some scantily clad ladies are waiting on standby to heal you if you can find them.
The action is simple but the platforming and the shooting works well, and even though you're generally looking at hallways and industrial settings, the game looks nice. The cutscene graphics are sharp and the music is good throughout, though the tunes can't really compete with what Sunsoft was doing in their NES carts.
It's a bit on the short side and there is more backtracking than I would've preferred, but City Hunter was fun. It feels like a Rolling Thunder game that has had its story directly incorporated into the gameplay. If anything about that sounds good to you, be sure to check it out!
(And is it just me, or do some of these enemies sound like they're dropping the F-bomb when they die?)
