Crusader Kings 2 Suggestion: Greenland?
So a conversation popped up on the CK2 Subreddit, https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/5mgphg/should_greenland_be_added_into_the_game/
U/_hedgehog_1 : “Should Greenland be added into the game? ”
He cites:
- Suggests decision-based system
- Suggests not actually placing it on the map.
U/Meritania adds
What you described doesn't really need to exist on the map, merely exist as an event chain giving a modifier to the discoverer or inheritable trait 'King of Greenland'
Like the moon in that 21st century Victoria II mod, just let it give a state a resource buff as opposed to map inclusion

I'd say this is a pretty neat concept, so I'm building off of it a bit.
Maybe have some requirements for western-coast nations cultures with something like a history of sailing (Norse, England, maybe Iberian nations/France/Morocco) to need to meet, like Shipbuilding 2-3 they can take an Intrigue decision called, "Attempt to Colonize Greenland." Maybe, instead, it would only be applicable to characters with select western-coast provinces.
The description texts could be, "An envy to the seafaring nations of the world, only your dynasty has succeeded in maintaining the logistical expenses needed to form an effective colony far out west, beyond where our maps extend. There are prizes to be had for holding this settlement, but it comes with some risks, too."
The reward is a titular title (mainly since it doesn't get map-represented) that is inherited along with the nation, itself, unless it is usurped by conquest.
As a reward, have it do something really simple for the holder like, say, "gives 5 ducats/month, +.5 prestige/month, +5 vassal opinion." It would be a nice benefit to have, but you also inherit a chance for a negative event (basically, reading "Your colony in Greenland is struggling. It's in dire need of reinforcements, a costly infusion easily equal to three years worth (180) what the colony normally produces, to have any hope to survive.”) where you must pay to retain the title. You'd be able to go into bankruptcy to pay it off, but hoooo boy – If you don't pay it off, you essentially resign/destroy the title and the decision to colonize becomes available to all appropriate countries!
Note that seafaring nations with equivalent or less technology may undertake a special plot/decision ("Develop Greenland Expidentiary Force," or something) wherein the challenger spends a significant amount of funding (let's say 300 ducats, which would be five years of holding it as described above) in order to obtain a casus belli for this war. The war goal would need to be coded to correspond to the user's capital province for technical reasons, as I've experienced/noticed bugs where you declare on someone for a titular title and even if you fully occupy them, you don't control the war goal which is the title itself, which isn't bound to a seige-able province. In fact, just fix this for all titular title contests.
In theory, a similar system could be used by nations on the far right or far bottom of the map to seize upon some other mechanic of history. For example, one quick peek at Wikipedia for refreshers and I'll encourage you to do your own research on Mansa Musa's pilgrimage in 1325 became the stuff of legends as he adventured flambouyantly, in terms of gold dust alone, with “...animals included 80 camels which each carried between 50 and 300 pounds of gold dust. ” Supposedly he actually established control over the entire gold market of the Meditteranian area and built one Mosque every week. When an appropriate nation (in this case, pretty much Mali or maybe Morroco) saves up enough gold (perhaps 500?), it can launch a special variant of the Pilgrimage which is more dangerous, but capable of awarding pledges of fealty from rulers (AI, though players can take a decision to swear fealty) within the area, with same-religion/same-culture being far stronger in the likelyhood of getting a vassalization request. Alternatively, since that's an admittedly-bizzare mechanic to add in, it's also possible you might consider some of those a purchase of claims against neighbors, or even just a simliar titular-title modifier to the proposed Greenland one.
