My recent Dead Space 1 replay. Done 1 chapter at a time, continuing on from the previous episode.

The strategy is simple, and yet I think it's the most effective DS1 strategy; sell everything from chapter 1, get the level 2 suit, Pulse Rifle and Line Gun, and sell excess Line Gun ammo to upgrade the Pulse Rifle ASAP. Then focus on the Line Gun Minr upgrades, and Stasis and HP after that.

The Plasma Cutter is amazing in DS1 but I think that the Rifle is a little better overall. Either is fine. The Line Gun rocks in DS1 because of the valuable ammo drops and amazing secondary fire, in combination with plentiful Stasis recharge points through the first few chapters, and DS1's generous Stasis meter relative to the later games.
