I've been avoiding the Mules because the smoke grenade is useless and all I have is a piece of rope (called strand) to fight someone who uses a spear that can stun.
I played Sekiro Shadows Die Twice and I thought of how you can spam the parry (right-click) and for this game don't waste your materials on the smoke grenade, spamming the parry works!
If you want to (or have too) fight melee it's best if you do the following:
-using the Strand press and hold right-click then keep clicking left-click (spam the heck out of it) and Sam will parry, you don't have to time it
-you can press both left and right-click (the same way you grip for balance) then press V to charge the Mule then punch the dude (press V) or use the strand if you're behind him.
-you can also use the charge (again press and hold both left and right-click then V) to avoid the Mule's attack(s)
-as a last resort, you can use a small cargo as a melee weapon, just grab one then press V but the cargo will be destroyed...

I already have a BOLA GUN Level 2, it is easier to progress through the game and get it first from the Craftsman, if you get the tools you will be able to craft the Bola Gun, get his stars to level 4 then you can fabricate Bola Gun Level 2. Check the Share Locker, sometimes you'll see one, just get it and use it!
You will need a Bola Gun because there is a certain type of Mule that has a high resistance to melee attacks, they have a glowing hood.
