UI in Defiance can be bewildering at first (yes you weren't the only one to take a long time finding the logout) so here's a guide for newbies on how to add a mod. An EGO rating of 100 is required. Break trash weapons down to provide additional Ark Salvage. Most weapons come with a slot or two ready. _ _ o_ (under LVL) means one slot is ready to accept a magazine mod and 3 more slots could be added. If the mod slot is highlighted it means there's actually a mod present. Weapons like the Plague Bringer and Hydra only reveal their code after the first slot is added. Synergy mods work as a set; the more you have, the better.
