Detroit Reawakening tells the origin story of a newly awakened android, Nines, and his enemies-to-lovers journey with his human partner, Detective Gavin Reed. Although lovers in the present, Gavin and Nines nostalgically reflect on their rocky early history, and the day that changed everything in their relationship. Built in the world of the video game Detroit Become Human, this short fan film comes from homegrown love of its fandom, and the Reed900 ship.
Much like its predecessor Detroit Evolution, this short film will center a gay asexual romance from queer own-voices creators, and we will bring back our core cast from Detroit Evolution - Maximilian Koger, Christopher Trindade, Michael Smallwood, and Carla Kim, alongside writer/director Michelle Iannantuono.
For those who have been here since the beginning, Detroit Reawakening is also a remake of our first short film, Detroit Awakening. Detroit Awakening was a passion project of director/writer Michelle Iannantuono (me!), made by a skeleton crew and $1400 self-funded dollars. The film was equal parts professional and humble - hiring trained actors and experienced crew, while also limited by a low budget and gear constraints. I'd love the chance to remake Awakening with the same technology, budget, and team that we brought together for Evolution, to create a complete, seamless duo of films.
But most significantly, I want the chance to reclaim Awakening from a scar that spoils its legacy for both myself and the fan community that supported it - the presence of its original Gavin actor, whose behavior hurt the community and hurt his teammates. Over the years, I have seen folks express reluctance to rewatch the original Awakening, some disregarding or ignoring it entirely, because of their discomfort watching him on film. We seek to reclaim this story for all of our fans, to give the community the prequel/sequel they deserve...and to return the love for those who've been with us since the beginning.
