There is actually a fleshed out reasoning behind the juicy comment of the mummy. In the original script and the movie novel, they explain that since Imhotep had eaten the scarabs in his sarcophagus, he was condemned to live forever. Also, Imhotep is considered a sacred man, and since the scarabs ate him, they were condemned to live forever as well. It was just a perpetual cycle of them eating each other.
