Dirt Rally 2 VR! Wow It has Some Issues! But I know the Answer to Some of Them!
Dirt Rally 2.0 VR, has finally arrived for PCVR headsets, via the Oculus and Steam stores! But it has some issues, for both versions, I'm going to be going over the stages in the steam version as it's been reported that there are some stages that run nicely and some that don't. Let's find out, I will be running the same settings (see below) of each stage that I try, and later I will be running the same settings under the Oculus store version where I can.
A lot of people have been saying about using -vrmode Oculus as a launch option in steam, from my testing below this seems like placebo effect, though turning AWS off via Oculus Tray Tool had the only real measurable effect!
From my trying under both stores versions, on the same stage (Argentina, Las Juntas), same car (Golf GTI) same settings :
Rift CV1, I7 9700K, RTX 2080ti
Oculus Store Version Average 90fps with a few dips to 45fps, (But I have a no audio bug on Oculus Version, some have this problem some don't)
Steam Version without -vrmode Oculus Average 45fps with regular dips below 45fps, also SteamVR Reprojection and ASW (ASW on Auto) don't seem to be playing nicely together so add a horrible jitter.
Steam Version with -vrmode Oculus and AWS turned off, Average 78fps with same regular dips below 45fps, real bad jitter is reduced but you still need VR Legs (and stomach) made of steel not to feel rough playing it.
Steam Version with -vrmode Oculus and AWS turned to Auto, Average 45fps with same regular dips below 45fps, bad jitter seemed reduced compared to when not using -vrmode Oculus (could be placebo or me just getting used to it as I plough through), a stomach made of steel not to feel rough playing it still needed.
There is no oculus_api.dll's in the folders of the steam build, that command (or -oculus) should be doing nothing and you will see that steamvr still opens which means it is not natively using an Oculus api for the steam version, as Codemasters themselves confirmed on their own forums. This seems to be played out from my testing that the -vrmode Oculus launch option is probably a placebo, but turning the AWS to off via Oculus Tray Tool had the only real measurable effect! It also seemed to lose the worst of the jitter/stutters.
