Reference:
A sword is a type of cold weapon with a straight blade, intended for cutting and stabbing blows, in the broadest sense - the collective name for all long bladed weapons with a straight blade.
In modern domestic historical weapons science, a narrower definition of a sword is adopted: an offensive weapon with a double-edged straight blade more than 60 centimeters long, intended primarily for chopping blows. Weapons with a single-edged straight blade are broadswords.
A similar definition is contained in the national standard:
Contact bladed thrusting and slashing weapon with a straight medium or long massive two-edged blade.
Nevertheless, in everyday life, various types of weapons with a curved blade are often mistakenly referred to as swords, in particular, Japanese weapons, including katana and wakizashi, referred to by the State Standard as two-handed sabers (the Japanese themselves also clearly distinguish weapons with a straight double-edged blade - "tsurugi" , ε£ - from weapons such as katana, denoted by the hieroglyph ε, which in different cases can be read in different ways), as well as weapons with a straight blade with one-sided sharpening, which refers either to broadswords, or to combat knives, cleavers, and so on - in particular , falchion. Such types of weapons as a sword and a rapier are also sometimes ranked as swords, which is not entirely true - in the existing classification they stand out as independent types of edged weapons on a par with a sword, although they are associated with their origin.
It should also be borne in mind that other languages ββhave their own, specific use of words, which is different from that adopted in the domestic weaponry tradition. In particular, in a number of languages, chopping bladed weapons with straight and curved blades are not terminologically separated in any way, being called a word that is usually translated into Russian as "sword", but in fact may correspond in this context to other types of bladed edged weapons. And, for example, English. sword in a broad sense can denote both a one-sided sharpened weapon and a double-edged weapon, both with a straight and curved blade - to indicate a specific type, specifying adjectives and prefixes are used (dress-sword is literally a "costume sword", that is light sword, worn with a civilian dress, back-sword - literally "sword with a butt", single-edged, including sword and saber; and so on).
