DJ Rashad + DJ Spinn: Teklife in Monterrey (Documentary)
Directed by Jim Larson
This past March, Pitchfork.tv went to Mexico to make a short film documenting a weekend in the life of late Chicago footwork luminary DJ Rashad and fellow producer DJ Spinn. Surrounding their performance at the Monterrey-based DIY music festival NRMAL, the film follows the duo from arrival to departure, capturing the event through their eyes.
Rashad seemed invincible that weekend— at the peak of his creative powers, commanding the crowd in tidal ebbs and flows, and brimming over with the infectious enthusiasm and kind-spiritedness those around him knew and loved. It felt implausible that, less than two months later, he would no longer be with us. What's left is a bittersweet but moving portrait of these two influential DJs and best friends, celebrating the lives they built for themselves and tearing up the streets of Monterrey together— another weekend, another city, another party.
