2001 saw the release of Alien Vendetta (av.wad), a 32-level single player megawad for Vanilla Doom, and one of the few PWADs that are allowed to be used in Compet-n speedruns.

In 2003, as part of Doomworld's Top 100 WADs of All Time list by Andrew Stine (Linguica) and Mike Watson (Cyb), Watson wrote that "AV is simply an amazing effort and indeed deserving of a place here [on this list]. In fact, I (and many others) would go as far to put AV in the top ten wads of all time. Even if the gameplay isn't your thing, you will simply not find a better collection of 32 maps, and you probably won't ever again".
