Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Playthrough | Part 1: The Tale of Ragnar McRyan
With the fundraiser over and done with, I was able to get my New 3DS XL modded with a capture board. Now I'm ready to start anew doing content on DS & 3DS. What better way to start than with a Dragon Quest game... the fourth entry. Welcome to Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen.
Dragon Quest IV was released for the Nintendo Famicom on February 11, 1990. We wouldn't get this until October of 1992 as Dragon Warrior IV, nine months after the release of Dragon Warrior III. It would also be the last mainline Dragon Quest game to be released overseas until 2001, aside from some remakes and spinoffs. Want to know what happened? Wait until I do Dragon Quest V. I'll detail it all in full.
As for remakes, the game would be remade for the PS1 on November 22, 2001, but only in Japan. Enix planned to bring the game overseas in 2002 but plans were canceled when Heartbeat, the developers ceased game development operations. It was then revealed that rising costs in translation and localization prevented Enix from passing it to another developer. Oh, and Heartbeat never told Enix's US branch about this. Made worse is that the PS1 was dying, and people moved onto the PS2. Had they gone through with it, Enix would have to price the game at $10-20 and a price like that wouldn't cover costs and in turn would kill the company. Ouch.
As for Heartbeat, some of its members would form a new company Arte Piazza while several others form Genius Sorority, responsible for the Orre Pokémon games. Arte Piazza is still around to this day and would be responsible for remaking much of the mainline games. Hell, they're responsible for the Super Mario RPG remake. Anyway, Dragon Quest IV would be remade again for the Nintendo DS and would be released on November 22, 2007 (Japan) and September 2008 for North America (16th), Europe (12th) and Australia (11th). The same release would get ported to Android & iOS on April 17, 2014, in Japan and August 7th for worldwide.
For the sake of things, I will be covering the DS version of the game and I'm doing this because Square-Enix needs to bring the other entries to modern consoles. Anyway, unlike the previous three games, Dragon Quest IV follows a chapter-based storyline. The first four chapters would focus on specific characters and their respective stories while the fifth focuses on the hero meeting up with all the other characters to take on the true menace. Not only that but there's a sixth chapter that was retained from the PS1 version. It's a lot believe me.
But anyway, the first part gives us a prologue introducing us to our new hero, Solo. Surprisingly you can choose to start with either a male or female hero. We also begin the first chapter, Ragnar McRyan and the Case of the Missing Children. This chapter focuses on Ragnar, a knight who gets involved in a mystery. Many children within some villages are vanishing. So, he decides to get to the bottom of it. He gets some assistance thanks to a Healslime named Healie. Healie is a party member you can't control. It uses an AI to determine what's best for Ragnar. Expect to grind up a bit while trying to solve the mystery.
Part 2 will conclude the first chapter and learn some interesting things.
