Description: Drakar och Demoner is Scandinavia's first and biggest tabletop RPG, originally launched in 1982. Now, we celebrate its 40th anniversary with a brand new and reimagined edition, with one foot firmly planted in the heritage of decades of Swedish gaming and the other in the modern and innovative game design for which Free League Publishing is known worldwide.
There has been talk about the "Swedish wave" in the RPG world in the last few years, with award-winning titles like Tales From the Loop, Symbaroum, Forbidden Lands, and MÖRK BORG. Drakar och Demoner is the game that started it all.
The very first 1982 edition of the game was a translation of Magic World by Chaosium, but Drakar och Demoner soon took a life of its own, evolving through a dozen various editions in Sweden over the decades. Now, Drakar och Demoner will be made available to an international audience, under the English title Dragonbane.
Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane has art by acclaimed illustrator Johan Egerkrans (Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying) and game design by the award-winning team behind Mutant: Year Zero, Forbidden Lands, and the upcoming Blade Runner RPG.
Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane is a classic fantasy RPG full of magic, mystery, and adventure. This new edition is designed from the ground up to facilitate fast and furious play, with very little prep time and adventures that are a breeze to run.
Though a toolbox allowing you to tell fantasy stories of all kinds, Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane is a game with room for laughs at the table and even a pinch of silliness at times – while at the same time offering brutal challenges for the adventurers.
We call this playstyle "mirth and mayhem roleplaying" – great for long campaigns but also perfect for a one-shot if you just want to have some quick fun at your table for a night. The core set will include at least one complete adventure and we hope to unlock many more as stretch goals, offering a complete campaign to play even in the core game set.
THE RULES
The game mechanics of Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane are based on the well-established core of the previous editions, but with a few twists and updates inspired by Free League’s decade of cutting edge game design.
Your character has six base attributes each ranging from 3 to 18, and skills on a 1–18 scale. The core mechanic is rolling a D20 equal to or lower than your skill level to succeed. As an optional rule, you can push your roll just like in Free League's Year Zero Engine games, allowing a re-roll but triggering a negative Condition of some kind.
For more details on the game rules, check out the Quickstart PDF above.
THE WORLD
Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane is a game of fast-paced fantasy adventures. The core game presents a core mythology of this fantasy world, focused on the eternal struggle between dragons and demons. The ruins of fallen kingdoms, worshiping either of these rival godlike creatures, beckon brave adventurers with the lure of hidden treasures.
Rather than describing entire continents, the core game focuses on the Misty Vale, a hidden mountain valley until recently overrun by savage orcs and goblins. In recent years, the orcs have retreated into the mountains, leaving the land open for explorers, settlers and adventurers of other kin such as humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, mallards, and wolfkin. The land lies open for adventure.
