I shell out cash so you don't have to. I check out the current streamer bait "Dread Hunger" to see what the game would look like for a solo pub player.

In general:

1) General lack of european servers, or english speaking servers is downright silly, most lobbies are Asian or non-english speaking making finding a lobby difficult to do. Great for ruskies or asians but not very good for a newly released game for the rest of the world!

2) Communication is limited to basics "I have coal" "I need food" in most pub games due to the time limitations from the crew, where every second counts and "who dunnits" waste time.

3) It can feel very easy to win the game as the thralls, who merely have to go rogue and survive for two days tossing out coal in the late game to prevent crew from feeding the ship. The most effective game with the thralls was literally them abandoning ship and spending 2 days running along the map throwing coal into the ocean!

4) Social deduction is limited due to crew time constraints; everyone must be going full pelt to get enough resources to survive and spread the vessel's growth. This means limited keeping an eye on other crew members, and generally the players that don't come back to the ship are the thralls. There's no real tense standoff moments or mad murders as either noone wants to make the first move, or the thralls are completely avoiding ever coming into contact with the crew in the first place!

5)Classes are rather unique mostly due to their starting equipment, I found the hunter's common theme of lone wolfing interesting, although out of the three games I played I never saw anything tangible come back from the hunter, they mostly went camping the entire game. Equally the Chaplin's key is very powerful and everyone loves the chef. Although everyone can do everything it makes the game a fun role play, and subtly points the player to what they should be doing (chef cooks and gets food, engineer gets coal, chaplin gets a bit of everything etc etc)

6) It's not very optimised, graphically it's unimpressive but it throttled my machine, often leading to drops in frames at intermittent intervals. However, combat is so basic that it's not really that much of a problem, just a nuisance. Turn bloom down to 0!

In summary, it's a fun game, but I suspect it will get repetitious, with the common theme for thralls being to abandon ship ASAP and wage guerilla warfare by resource dumping, rather then sneaky assassinations scheming, as local lobbies do not really promote that kind of playstyle. It's fun, but too expensive for what you get; a unique setting with limited servers, limited communication and limited strategy. Maybe get when on sale.
