After nine months of cinematic dribs and drabs and the false promise of Tenet, the trailer for Dune – a remake of David Lynch’s divisive 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s book series of the same name – is already one of the best films of the year.
With a ridiculously stacked cast featuring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem and Jason Momoa, as well as the world’s leading sci-fi director Denis Villeneuve behind the camera, it’s an easy win on paper, but given that the novels have been called “unfilmable” it could really have gone either way.
But as the three-minute first trailer – which sets Chalamet up as a clairvoyant young soldier who travels to a foreign planet that houses a mysterious drug with mystical powers – suggests, we needn’t have worried. Handed the keys to another massive sci-fi franchise following his visually stunning Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve clearly knows what he’s doing with an eye-watering budget to bring the story to life across two films (though the sequel hasn’t been officially confirmed).
In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, "the spice", a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes faster-than-light travel possible. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation, which is made perilous by the presence of giant sandworms. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
Who Is Starring in Dune?
Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet, is Paul Atreides, the central figure of the saga. Dave Bautista, who worked with director Denis Villeneuve in Blade Runner 2049, is re-teaming with the director. He’s playing Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, nicknamed “Beast,” the sadistic eldest nephew of a Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, overseer of the planet Arrakis.
From one galaxy far away to another, Oscar Isaac is Duke Leto Atreides, father to the film’s main character, Paul Atreides. played by Rebecca Ferguson plays his wife Lady Jessica. Duke Leto’s taking over stewardship of the planet Arrakis is what sets the plot of Dune into motion, making his role a critical one.
Oscar winner Javier Bardem has also joined the cast as Stilgar Ben Fifrawi, the leader of a the Fremen tribe that who aides Paul Atreides in his fight against the Harkonnens. Spider-Man: Homecoming actress Zendaya plays the role of Chani, a Fremen warrior native to Arrakis, who eventually becomes the romantic interest for Paul Atreides.
From the depths of the sea to a waterless and dry world, Jason Momoa will play the role of Duncan Idaho in Dune. A swordsmaster who is eternally loyal to House Atreides, Duncan Idaho is also the only character to appear in all of the original novels in the Dune series, so should this become a long running franchise, Momoa will be splitting his time between the desert and the oceans for some time.
We can also add Thanos and Cable himself, Josh Brolin. According to Variety, Brolin will be playing “Gurney Halleck, the warmaster for Chalamet’s family and a mentor to his character.” In the 1984 David Lynch Dune adaptation, that part was played by a pre- Star Trek era Patrick Stewart.
Are you ready for Dune?
