Dynamic Game Music - Layering/Branching
This week i was working on alternative "mother"-dungeon themes (slightly different instrumentation to the regular dungeons, based + elements of the melody of the main theme, since it's connected to "mother") for Need For Cheese by @greengoogames
Here's another example of your dynamic Music I was workign on this week. It compares the dungeon bg-loop to it's version that gets triggered once the dungeon is cleared. We make that possible by the most simple way of implementing dynamic music - layering/branching. (this way we can also make some further instruments appear if specific enemies appear, that have "unique" instruments" to enhance the memorability)
In our dungeons we have 3 layers - a "general" one, that plays once the player enters a specific dungeon. A more intense one, that joins the BGM once enemies spot the player. And there's a safety one, that starts playing solo, once the player cleared a dungeon.
Piano always = safe.
In the whole game the piano will only appear if there's a safe/peaceful situation. That occurs in every single dungeon / battle situation / bossfight of the game.
The player will remember this signal - at least subconsciously.
An easy way to implement this in a game is utilizing layering/branching. The different versions all play parallel & at the same time, but only specific layers/branches are solo'ed.
As always - if there might pop up any questions regarding the vst's/vi's/plugins i used, feel free to reach out via dm anytime.
Have a great day,
tobi
