These new rules will come into force at the start of 2024, but “smart” companies will begin applying the rules right now.
The new EU rules require web platforms to adopt specific measures against illegal content. After taking the helm, Elon Musk laid off almost half of the employees. After that, it directed several of its demands to the field of automation. Content moderation basically fits under these new operations. The EU regulators are not happy with these changes and require social media to employ more people in this field. There is a problem: Hiring more people goes against Elon Musk’s plans. Right now, the goal is to cut costs and bring profit. According to Reuters, a meeting to discuss this theme took place this Tuesday (March 7) between Musk, executives, and regulators in Brussels.The changes to the social media include cuts of trust and security teams. Moreover, it has closed multiple offices across the world. The company’s boss at EU, Thierry Breton, alerted Musk in January during a Video-Call. According to him, the company will have a “big work forward”. It will need to apply transparent use policies, reinforce content moderation, and protect free speech.
