Empires of the Undergrowth is an ant colony management game, in a fast-paced real-time strategy style. The player excavates their nest underground, constructing tunnels and chambers to store food and raise brood. On the surface, the ants claim territory, gather resources, overwhelm fearsome arachnids and clash with other colonies. Nest design, army size, composition and attack timing are key to securing victory.

In the main story, a gene-thief ant colony must establish itself in a formicarium and survive a multitude of challenges that the scientists create. The formicarium is your hub world.
When you are in the formicarium, click the ant symbol in the top left corner of the screen to open the mission menu. Hovering your cursor over each hexagon symbol will show you details about the respective mission.
A hard population cap, which is based on your number of brood tiles, is set in the formicarium. You cannot build more brood tiles when you reach the limit. It increases each time a new formicarium challenge becomes available. Currently, the cap is 100/ 125/ 150/ 175 before each respective formicarium challenge.
Medium is the intended difficulty for first playthrough. On easy, health of all enemies is halved. On hard and insane, usual enemies are replaced with adult or larger variants and their number increases.
Beating a documentary mission for the first time, both with and without challenge mode, gives you a large amount of resources.
Formicarium challenges
Formicarium challenges must be beaten before you can continue the main story. These challenges occur in your formicarium, where your customizations are applied. If you lose, you will be sent back to right before you have attempted the challenges. You only earn rewards by beating each challenge for the first time.
Formicarium Challenge 1/ Formicarium Challenge 2: You must survive attacking waves.
Formicarium Challenge 3: You must defeat the opposing colony.
Formicarium Challenge 4: You must defeat the titans.
After having progressed to a certain state of the story, a spawning menu will be available on the left part of the screen. You can freely drop previously introduced enemy creatures in your formicarium to test your colony. They don't grant food.
If you decide to move on with the main story, your queen and some workers will be moved to another formicarium with little to no resources to start anew. This lets you redesign your nest to fit the new challenges. Each territory point or excavated tile gives you 1 Royal Jelly. You also gain a certain amount of Royal Jelly equal to 1.25% of your construction cost and amount of stored food. New units are available for purchase every time you rehouse.[
