Ok, well I finally figured out the second phase's trick. It's don't be hasty, simple lesson that usually applies, but if you're like me you get nervous after getting through phase 1. This usually translates into swinging prematurely and getting run through.

Besides the generic " don't swing wildly" advice, the best advice I can give is pay attention to the sword Ludwig uses. If it points in the AIR, he's about to do a mini moonwave..thingy followed by stabbing his sword in the ground, followed by a HUGE attack in front of him, so get behind him to avoid it.

If he just puts the sword in the ground without playing show and tell, he's probably going to just do an aoe around him so back off 2 backsteps should do it. Otherwise, just dodge precisely meaning do NOT panic dodge. Running out of stamina is deadly in this fight, you NEED to dodge.
