When it rains, it pours!
In its second meeting all-time, the University of Hawaiʻi Men's Basketball team came through with an energetic win at the Stan Sheriff Center over the Central Arkansas Bears, 95-76, on Sunday.
Noel Coleman led all players with 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting and was 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Coleman was followed by Juan Munoz's 19; Munoz was a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range. Bernardo da Silva was next with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds on 6-for-9 shooting, and Justin McKoy rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11.
Tucker Anderson led Central Arkansas with 23 points on 8-for-15 shooting, which included four triples. He was followed by 15 from Masai Olowokere, 13 from Johannes Kirsipuu, who had three triples, and 12 from Glory Etim.
The 'Bows scored the first five points of the first half, but the Bears were only getting started. Behind the 3-point shooting of Anderson and Kirsipuu, Central Arkansas eventually took as much as a seven-point lead.
The 'Bows answered the bell themselves from the 3-point range. Behind Munoz's five triples, McKoy, Coleman, and JoVon McClanahan responded with triples of their own. Munoz's third triple was enough to put UH back in the lead for good, and McClanahan stung Central Arkansas with his fourth career buzzer-beating triple to make it 54-43 UH at halftime.
It was an excellent first half for the 'Bows! They committed just three turnovers and made 20 field goals -- nine of which were from 3-point range.
UH was not done going into the second half. Although the Bears cut their gap to nine points with 16:51 remaining, the 'Bows never let them get any closer.
Da Silva sank back-to-back free throws, and Coleman executed a layup to keep the gap above 10 from that point on.
UH kept the fire burning from 3-point range, as they made five more in the second half to total 14 for the game. Teammates Harry Rouhliadeff and Akira Jacobs made triples of their own, with Jacobs' coming with 25 seconds remaining. It was also Jacobs' first triple as a Hawaiʻi player.
Central Arkansas had no answer left and conceded to the 95-76 defeat.
It was another efficient second half for the 'Bows, as they shot 52% (13-for-25) from the field, and committed five turnovers to total a season-low eight turnovers.
UH will return to the Stan Sheriff Center next Sunday, Dec. 10, for the second of a seven-game homestand. They will face off against the Division II Hawaiʻi Pacific University Sharks at 5 p.m. HST. You can watch the game on Spectrum Sports.
