Based off the video game which is in turn based on a Russian science fiction novel. A request by thelostism.
The concept of this story really intrigued me and I personally think this would be an excellent thriller!

The story follows a young Russian apocalypse survivor named Artyom who like the remainder of his people are living in the subway system of Moscow, retrofitted into a fallout shelter, each station its own tiny microcosm of mankind. Life is not going well as cabin fever sets in and supplies run low. Even periodic journeys to the ravaged, irradiated surface are not keeping things together. To make matters worse there's a new mutant strain which is wiping out entire colonies, the dreaded Dark Ones. Their rumored abilities to control minds are tested and found true by a scouting party, but Artyom proves to be unaffected by their powers. This starts him on a long strange road to free his people, fight the next stage of human evolution, and perhaps return life to a world long dead.

I love the concept of this story. Its dark, but also hopeful because despite the ruination of civilization, mankind persists in believing they can put the pieces back together. Metro 2033 has two tiers of location which perfectly mirror each other: the darkness of the Metro itself and the blinding light of the world above. Both harbor their own dangers, their own wonders, and few other stories I can think of has such a built in dichotomy of literal shadow and brilliance, a bifurcated atmosphere.

A story with a Russian science fiction hero would be great to see too.
