SHADOW STRUGGLE....a 1996 japan-only 3d fighting game released by RACDYM on the PS1 and distributed by BANPRESTO of the SUPER ROBOT WARS series fame.
I never heard of this fighter until a few months ago and i decided to buy it along many other 3d beat-em-ups for my newly bought ps1:)
The gameplay is a mixture of TEKKEN, STREET FIGHTER EX and BLOODY ROAR...quite innovative the use of the SQUARE button in conjunction with the d-pad to exexute special moves....TRIANGLE and CIRCLE are punch and kick while X is for some HYPER-like state (think of something similiar to SF ALPHA CUSTOM COMBO) that is quite broken and allows for very cheap and ripetitive combos.
Basically it's a decent beat-em-up, running at 60 FPS with decent gfx, that could have a decent following outside of japan...the only problems are 100% combos (even when not in HYPER mode), unescapable thows and short range for all the fighters' attacks.
There is also an ARENA mode where you can buy moves and other stuff but i still have to delve into it more accurately.
The ARCADE mode pits you against your typical sequence of cpu fighters.
After you have defeated the regular characters you are presented to the game's final bosses:BERSERK, your typical MECHA (almost PATLABOR like:))....whose long range attacks will make you cringe in pain, lol...then you will have to fight the tournament holder, MARRY. P, a scantly clad woman that uses many moves taken from the regular characters (think of VIRTUA FIGHTER's DURAL).
I've beaten the game using its poster boy, KEI, that is a mixture of STREET FIGHTER's RYU and KING OF FIGHTERS' RALPH:)
The cpu level was the easiest so i didnt get any real ending...normal level will give you your typical static anime ending with japanese text:)
The game was followed by CRITICAL BLOW, another decent fighter, that got a new main character, a beatiful anime intro, a new STORY mode and ranged energy-like attacks.
