Feathers Fly as Katherine S. Reviews Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is very enjoyable. The latest stop motion animation movie from Aardman Animators, 23 years in the making, has finally arrived. This sequel to Chicken Run is entertaining, very British in the best way possible, and full of my favorite original Chicken Run characters while introducing some new ones.
Now that Ginger (Thandiwe Newton), Rocky (Zachary Levi) and all the other chickens escaped the evil Mrs. Tweedy’s (Miranda Richardson) Chicken Farm, and were able to settle on a peaceful island, away from all the dangerous humans, Ginger and Rocky become parents when they hatch Molly (Bella Ramsey) into their lives. All is well until Molly gets a bit older and outgrows the safety of the island and seeks the adventures of the mainland and is lured into a newer, bigger, more advanced chicken farm. So, Ginger and her team of animal friends band together again to save Molly and all of the other chickens from being turned into nuggets.
Although this movie is a sequel to Chicken Run, it isn’t necessary to watch the first film, because this one provides a quick explanation of what happened in the first movie and gives context for the current settings. I’ve seen the original Chicken Run – it’s a great movie and I still recommend watching it if you haven’t seen it - it’s a good refresher for this movie. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and all of Aardman’s other movies, utilize my favorite animation style: stop motion. First, I am always so impressed with anything stop motion because I know from experience how time consuming it is and how hard it is to make things look smooth. And as in every Aardman movie, the animation looks so effortless and polished. I began watching their movies as a toddler and I feel so nostalgic and happy whenever I see Aardman’s signature style – this movie definitely instills that feeling. The voice overs are strong in this movie. Rocky was originally voiced by Mel Gibson and Ginger was originally voiced by Julia Sawalha, but Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton really step into their roles and the recast personifies the now older and more mature Rocky and Ginger as parents, so I didn’t mind the switch up. My favorite characters are the two rats, Nick and Fetcher, played by Ramesh Ranganathan and Daniel Mays, respectively, because they are so hilarious. They always brighten up whatever scene they are in. Just being up front, I eat meat, and I hate to say that I love chicken. (This movie kinda made me feel bad about eating chickens).
The message of this movie is to always be there for your friends and family. It’s also a reminder that it takes a village to get things done. This movie deals with the meat processing industry so do with that what you may.
I give Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget 3.5 out of 5 stars and I recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. It is available on Netflix now.
