Nothing special is done to get the minion, just get Potting Soil and Allagan Melon Seed from the vendor, plant the seed, water every day, and, voila, a minion in 7 days. The harvested melon can be right-clicked in inventory to "use" to gain the minion; the harvested melon is also used for the Slice Melon Culinarian recipe (https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Sliced_Watermelon).
