BACK STORY:

The campaign is randomly generated and I chose to play as the Syracusians of Southern Sicily, an indepedent Greek city that employs a lot of mercenaries. Against us will be the Mamertines (Sons of Mars) of Messana (modern Messina), an army of Campanian mercenaries who, at the invitation of Syracuse in 288 BC, captured Messana, butchered all the males, then wedded the women. Soon after they began to expand into north-eastern Sicily encroaching on the borders of Syracuse. This is where the conflict of this campaign takes place - around 270 BC.

Outside this campaign, but of interest, in 265 BC the Mamertines implored the Carthaginian navy for help to protect their city and so Syracuse withdrew not wanting to attract the ire of Carthage. Feeling uncomfortable with their new friends, the Mamertines then appealed to Rome for their protection. Rome eventually agreed enraging Carthage who saw Sicily as their domain. The Syracusians then allied with Carthage and thus began the First Punic War in 264 BC.
