Your kuya Chris is a long time hip-hop head and self-professed lover of rock ballads. (What Filipino isn't, right?) I decided in my first video on learning the Filipino language through one of the hottest Filipino artists to land on YouTube, the musical genius that is EZ Mil.
EZ Mil is an artist who can sing, rap, dance, produce and play multiple instruments across multiple genres! This young man is in my humble opinion, a refreshing take on the hip-hop landscape and deserves our support. Seeing his video "Panalo (Trap Carinosa)" on the Wish USA bus literally compelled me to want to learn more about my Filipino culture and being conversational as a goal for this year, because I felt so much pride in hearing his delivery and lyrics about being proud to be Pinoy (Filipino) regardless of your skin color or background.
I paired listening to Panalo with a very popular song by his equally talented father, Paul Sapiera, who is the lead singer of several bands, in this instance, the Pinoy rock band Rockstar, who had a huge smash hit with "Mahal Pa Rin Kita".
Another all-English song they released is "Parting Time" that is also popular. I decided to put them together to get some vocabulary from both songs. To be honest, EZ Mil's flow was very fast and I did not have the ability to catch everything, so I went with the chorus mainly. I decided to see if I could try to bring meaning to both songs. In either case, my aim is not only for my comprehension, but for anyone unfamiliar with Filipino that wants to know what the meaning is behind the songs.

Greetings mga kaibigan (friends!)! My name is Chris and I'm a Filipino-American born and raised in the US. My goal through this series is to go through different songs, new and old in the Filipino mediaverse to try and learn enough vocabulary and phrases to be conversational in the Filipino language, also known as Tagalog or Pilipino.
I am NOT a native speaker and have a vague understanding of the language, being raised by my Filipino parents who immigrated to
the United States. There is SO much talent in the Philippines that the world either has not seen or need to see more of. And there is so much of my life that I can remember that has music tied to it. This is why I'm hoping to be able to learn more Filipino by seeing videos of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) on the web. Please help me in my journey, pamilya! My goal once I've learned enough is to help my beautiful wife and kids start to learn as well, with the ultimate goal of speaking with friends and family in the Philippines and across the world in this wonderful language, while also learning about the culture as well!
Please like and subscribe if you like what you're seeing and feel free to comment and help me reach my goal of being a better conversational speaker of the Filipino language. Positive vibes, please! We all start somewhere and I felt that this was the right starting point for me. Maraming salamat! (Thank you!)
