In episode 8 of this Final Fantasy 2 SNES playthrough, we defeat Golbez's Wind Fiend, Valvalis, and subsequently learn of the 4 ADDITIONAL crystals kept underground, called the dark crystals, so we're not completely screwed, we just bought a bit more time (and this LP just got a bit longer). After some shopping and exploring on the world map thanks to our airship, we navigate to the village of Agart and open the key to the underground/dark world. As soon as we touch down we find ourselves in the middle of a fire fight between Golbez and the friendly Dwarves and of course our airship is wrecked.
