Palom can be good in the Zeromus fight with his Meteor spell but requires skill and luck. He needs to reach level 50 to get it but him and Porom can level up faster than everyone. Even faster than Cecil but only slightly. The downside with Meteor is the Whirl counter attack. A character can be saved from sap, depending on how much HP Whirl has left them with and lag not slowing down any emergency heals. Meteor requires proper ATB setup at the start. This is why I attack with both Edge and Kain. Then I defend with Cecil and Porom. At slower speed settings you will have to do it differently. Unfortunately the GBA version doesn't show a casting time meter like the DS and PSP. If you attack Zeromus in a certain order with Meteor like I did, you can prevent him from healing himself and kill him faster. He will never go into phase 4 where he starts using Meteor if he doesn't get a chance to heal himself.

5:00 This is just a longer fight with flare killing a character. It's still possible to prevent Zeromus from healing himself and kill him fast with Meteor, after flare kills someone in the beginning. But I don't have the attack pattern memorized yet. And the pattern varies depending on which character died.
