Story recap: Cecil, captain of the Red Wings of Baron, has returned from a massacre in Mysidia where he was ordered to take their crystal by force. He and his crew feel terrible about this, and he questions the king's motives. The king dismisses him, as well as his friend Kain who comes to his defense, and sends them to the village Mist to deliver a package. Unbeknownst to them, their mission is to exterminate the summoners of Mist, and the package erupts in flame and burns the entire village.

Along the way, they had killed a mist dragon, who turned out to be linked to a woman in Mist. When a summoner's Eidolon dies, the summoner dies too. Among the flames in Mist, they find the summoner's daughter crying over her dead mother's body. Cecil and Kain renounce their loyalty to Baron and try to get the girl to safety, but in her anger at their actions, she summons Titan, causing a powerful earthquake that severs the land between Mist and the eastern desert. Cecil wakes up next to the girl on the desert side of the rift, with Kain nowhere to be found.

The girl is unconscious, so Cecil takes her to the closest safe place he can find, which happens to be the desert village of Kaipo. As they rest for the night, soldiers from Baron come to take the girl and bring Cecil back to Baron. Cecil refuses, and defeats them. Having seen him defend her, the girl finally begins to forgive his actions, and tells him that her name is Rydia.

Inside Kaipo, Cecil finds that Rosa had come after him, but collapsed from desert fever before reaching Kaipo. Fortunately, she was found by someone from Kaipo, who is now caring for her. Desert fever can be cured by exposure to the light from a Damcyan sand pearl, which can only be found within a cave where an antlion dwells.

The only way to Damcyan from Kaipo is a cavernous waterway infested with dangerous monsters. Rumors in town tell of a moonstruck old man blocking the way of anyone trying to travel through the waterway. Sure enough, inside the cave, they meet the sage Tellah, who tells of his daughter Anna who ran away to Damcyan after being tricked by a silver-tongued bard. Tellah has had a premonition of something sinister, and wishes to reach Damcyan castle as quickly as possible, but is unable to defeat a giant monster blocking the waterway. Realizing they both have the same goal, they join forces to fight their way through the cave.

After defeating the Octomammoth, the party emerges from the far side of the cave. As they approach Damcyan, they witness the Red Wings flying over the castle, and bombarding it with cannon fire. Hurrying in, they find all of the castle's inhabitants wounded and dying, including Tellah's daughter Anna. The bard appears, and Tellah attacks him in a fit of rage. Anna regains consciousness and puts a stop to the fight. She tells Tellah that the bard is Edward, the prince of Damcyan, who had disguised himself as a bard to avoid attention. She couldn't bear to stay with him without her father's blessing, but as she was about to leave, the Red Wings attacked, led by a man named Golbez. Golbez took Damcyan's fire crystal, then rained fire onto the castle. Anna had tried to shield Edward from their arrows.

As Anna dies, Tellah swears vengeance upon Golbez, and leaves to seek him out on his own. Edward cries over Anna's body, but Rydia and Cecil have no time for mourning, and snap him out of it. Cecil explains Rosa's situation to Edward, and asks for his help retrieving the Sand Pearl. Edward knows the Antlion's lair well, and agrees to join them, offering the use of a hovercraft docked at Damcyan to reave the cave. Saying a final farewell to Anna, the party departs the castle.
