Back story from before the events of FFVII

Cloud Strife born in Nibelheim was a loner of the town with his only friend being a girl named Tifa Lockhart.

Tifa and three of her friends plan to go to the nearby Mako reactor, Cloud over hears this plan and follows them from a distance, one by one her friends get scared and they run back to town. Cloud catches up to Tifa and they must cross a rope bridge to get to the reactor, the rope bridge breaks and they fall. Tifa's father blames Cloud for the accident, Cloud now feeling weak decides to travel to Midgar to join the Shinra Corporations SOLDIER to become just like Sephiroth the most powerful SOLDIER there is.

Cloud Fails to become a SOLDIER an has to settle in as an Infantry man.
about 2 years pass and Cloud meet Zair Fair a SOLDIER 1st Class they became friends when their helicopter crashed into the mountains near the Modeo Ravine. Cloud is sent to Nibelheim as an escort alongside Sephiroth and Zack as they investigate an incident in the towns Mako reactor. Tifa is their guide to the reactor but does not realise Cloud is there due to his infantryman mask.

Sephiroth destroys the town of Nibelheim setting it on fire killing the towns people including Clouds mother, after discovering the experiments being done by Shinra using Jenova's DNA and Mako energy.
Cloud full of hate for what Sephiroth has done runs into the reactor and finds Tifa and Zack laying on the floor, Cloud picks up Zack's Buster sword and wild Sephiroth was distracted with Jenova Cloud stabbed him through the stomach and dropped him down the reactors shaft.

Shinra rebuilds Nibelheim and places its staff there to cover up the incident. Cloud was taken away by Professor Hojo who began to experiment on him with Mako energy and Jenova's DNA. Zack frees Cloud from the shinra lab and they Escape, Cloud in a bad way from the Mako poisoning is barely able to move, he awakens to find his best friend Zack mortally wounded fight with the Shinra Corporation. Zack gives Cloud his Buster sword before he dies.
Confused from the Poisoning and the trauma of his friend dying clouds memories become jumbles up and Zacks become his own.

Cloud Travels to Midgar where after eight years he is reunited with his old friend Tifa. Cloud believing him memories are true he tells Tifa all about "Zacks" life and how he made it to be SOLDIER 1st Class. Tifa noticing how odd Cloud was being asked him to join AVALANCHE, the anti-Shinra resistance group. Cloud remembering his promise to Tifa when they were children agrees to join.
