The 'Reflect trick' is very useful in many battles, this being 1 of the first.
Let me explain... Spells like Dark hits its target and all around it. Casting Dark on yourself will cause it to hit all of your party members as long as they are close to each other, thus reflecting 3 hits per cast.
3 characters casting each a dark spell = 9 Dark hits!
This is particularly effective if Sleep works.
Sleep increases all damage taken by 50% and magic does not wake them up.
Garuda is weak against dark, that's also why it fell so quickly.
