Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia - Act 1 / Part #02: Thieves' Shrine (Hard/Classic)
In this part, Alm and friends advance towards the Southern Outpost. On the way, they learn that bandits have taken a woman captive to their nearby hideout, so naturally they take the detour to help her.
This also marks the introduction of changing classes at shrines. When you change class, your base stats will increase to match those of the class you're changing to. Other than movement, stats cannot lower when changing class and if no stat changes, your HP will increase by 1.
Male villagers have access to: Cavalier, Soldier, Mercenary, Archer, Mage.
Female villagers have access to: Cavalier, Pegasus Knight, Cleric, Mage.
One thing to keep in mind when changing class to a spellcaster is the list of spells that person can learn. For example, Gray can learn the powerful spell Sagittae, but Tobin can't. Tobin can learn Excalibur, while Gray can't. And Kliff can learn both of them. Let's see what they each can learn:
Gray: Fire, Sagittae, Thunder, Recover (Sage).
Tobin: Fire, Excalibur, Recover (Sage), Physic (Sage)
Kliff: Fire, Thunder, Excalibur, Sagittae, Recover (Sage), Aura (Sage)
Faye (Mage): Fire, Seraphim, Sagittae, Recover (Priestess), Freeze (Priestess)
Faye (Cleric): Recover, Nosferatu, Physic, Rescue, Seraphim (Saint), Anew (Saint)
You'll come to learn what each spell does as I play through the game.
Before the villagers, let's take a look at Silque, our new recruit.
Silque - A wandering Cleric, looking for someone to entrust her turnwheel with. Class: Cleric.
Growths: HP 45% / ATK 40% / SKL 35% / SPD 30% / LCK 60% / DEF 40% / RES 2%
Growths as a Cleric: HP 35% / ATK 40% / SKL 35% / SPD 30% / LCK 65% / DEF 30% / RES 4%
Silque is you first and only cleric if you choose not to turn Faye into one. She'll be patching up your units in battle, so she is invaluable. If her HP falls too low, she can use Nosferatu to steal HP from her foes. She isn't outstanding when it comes to stats, but her Heal, Warp and eventually Invoke spells will make her a really strong supporting unit.
Now, for which class each villager should turn into:
Gray's best class is Mercenary, to compensate his low SKL and SPD growths. In any other class, he'll be powerful but slow. Soldier could work as well, but you get enough of them in Alm's route. Other than Alm, he'll be the only Sword user in the army. Ain't that something.
Growths as a Mercenary: HP 45% / ATK 35% / SKL 35% / SPD 35% / LCK 25% / DEF 20% / RES 0%
Tobin's best class is Archer, though he could also work as a Mercenary if you wanted him to. His high SKL growth will help him land blows with accuracy while having a higher crit ratio.
Growths as an Archer: HP 35% / ATK 30% / SKL 60% / SPD 20% / LCK 30% / DEF 25% / RES 0%
Kliff's best class is undoubtedly Mage, thanks to his high SPD and the list of spells he learns. Keep in mind that spells weigh down the user, so having high SPD is important. As a Mercenary or Archer he'll have deadly high SKL and SPD but there's no real reason to waste such good mage potential.
Growths as a Mage: HP 35% / ATK 35% / SKL 50% / SPD 60% / LCK 20% / DEF 30% / RES 0%
Faye's best class will be either Cleric or Mage, again because of the spells she learns. Alm's army will have no shortage of lance users, so there's no need to turn her into a Cavalier or Pegasus Knight. As a Mage she learns Seraphim early to make short work of terrors and Sagittae for massive damage to anyone. Later she learns Freeze as a Priestess to stop enemies on their tracks. As a Cleric, she learns Physic to heal from afar and Rescue to warp allies next to her. Later she learns Anew as a Saint, which lets another unit move again.
Growths as a Mage: HP 30% / ATK 45% / SKL 25% / SPD 35% / LCK 30% / DEF 35% / RES 4%
Growths as a Cleric: HP 30% / ATK 40% / SKL 30% / SPD 30% / LCK 35% / DEF 30% / RES 5%
If you're playing Hard mode, I highly recommend Cleric over Mage. The extra healing will be incredibly useful.
