Here's a summary of what a project manager should ask questions about when starting a new project:

1) A project manager should make sure the business always understands the value proposition associated with a project.

2) A project manager should ensure the right executive sponsor is plugged into each project.

3) A project manager should understand the organization has run a project similar to the current project previously. If so, the project manager should look up any lessons learned or other documentation associated with that effort.

4) A project manager should understand if the business has a specific date in mind that they want to work to. You don't have to hit that date, but you need to manage expectations appropriately around it.

5) A project manager should ensure the business has a clear understanding of what project success looks like. This should come in the form of KPIs or other relevant metrics.
