Metal Gear Solid, a 1998 action-adventure stealth game for the PlayStation, took the world by storm. Developed by Hideo Kojima, it built upon the MSX2 Metal Gear games. Players take control of Solid Snake, a soldier tasked with infiltrating a nuclear facility and stopping a rogue special forces unit, FOXHOUND, from launching a nuclear strike.
Cinematic cutscenes rendered within the game engine and voice acting throughout added to the immersive experience. The game became a huge success, selling millions of copies and earning critical acclaim. It's considered a landmark title, popularizing the stealth genre and in-engine cutscenes.
The gameplay revolves around stealth. Players guide Snake through the facility, avoiding detection by enemies. When spotted, an "alert mode" activates, forcing Snake to hide until enemies lose suspicion. A radar helps players track enemy positions. In addition to stealth, the game includes set-piece firefights.
To stay hidden, Snake can use various tactics like crawling, hiding in boxes, or creating distractions. He also has access to gadgets like infrared goggles and a now-iconic cardboard box disguise. This emphasis on stealth encourages a non-violent approach, as taking on large groups of enemies can be risky.
Despite being 3D, the game retains an overhead perspective reminiscent of the original Metal Gear games. The camera shifts during specific situations, offering first-person views when aiming weapons or peeking around corners. Players can also use a first-person view to survey their surroundings.
Storytelling is delivered through cutscenes, codec calls, and boss battles. The codec, a radio communication device, offers advice from Snake's support team, including gameplay tips and story exposition. The game also features a VR training mode to hone your sneaking skills.
This revised version shortens the text while keeping the core information. It uses a more engaging tone and highlights key gameplay aspects.
