Frogger (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Majesco's 1998 arcade action game for the Sega Genesis, Frogger.
Just as was the case for the Super Nintendo, Frogger was the final official release for the Sega Genesis in North America.
However, unlike the SNES version (https://youtu.be/v06erxZO31Q ), the Genesis cart doesn't feel like a throwaway effort. Instead of squandering its energies trying to half-heartedly update a classic, this game aims to faithfully recreate the original 1981 arcade experience.
And sure enough, that's exactly what we got!
The only remaining vestige of the hot garbage that was the SNES game is the title screen image. Once you hit start, everything looks the way you hoped it would.
The "How to Play" sequence, the fun music, the stage layouts, and all of the enemies (including the otter!) are here, and the sprites appear to be pixel-perfect reproductions of the ones in the arcade. The only notable difference stems from the fact that the arcade game used a vertically-oriented monitor, so in order to accommodate a TV's 4:3 aspect ratio, the score, timer, number of lives, and the stage icons all now fill the thick black border on the right side of the screen.
It's a simple, barebones approach to porting. There are *no* extras here, including even the simplest of things (like a high score table or difficulty settings), but the core game is done right, and for a $15 budget title, that's just fine.
I smiled many times playing this. I think that that's a good sign that it does its job well.
