From Primitive to Palatial (How Did We Get Here)
From Primitive to Palatial; Resorts on Hawaii's Neighbor Islands (How Did We Get Here). The host for this show was DeSoto Brown.
The discussion was: The 1960s in Hawaii saw the first really large and sometimes pricey resorts outside of Oahu. Although some smaller destination hotels had begun as early as the late 1940s, the biggest and brightest ones didn't arrive till decades later. What were these new hotels? Where and why were they built?
The takeaway was: The growth of mass tourism, tied to improvements in travel technology, caused visitor developments to spread beyond Honolulu and Oahu. This occurred as Hawaii's large-scale agricultural industries were beginning to shrink and a new source of jobs and incomes was needed. Knowing this part of our economic history is crucial to understand why we are where we are today.
